Clear

The Black Beauty is a heritage variety aubergine which was introduced around 1910 and has been popular with gardeners ever since. Early to mature with an abundant crop of glossy fruits that are clear of the ground, this is a reliable favourite! Aubergines love long, hot summers and rarely do well outside, so make sure you have a sunny spot in your greenhouse or polytunnel for them.

Planning your site

Aubergines need fertile soil and lots of sunshine and shelter so their ideal home is a greenhouse, polytunnel or conservatory where they look great in medium-sized pots or in a grow-bag. If you are planting them into a bed they will need around 60cm between plants and it is best to always tie the plant loosely to a sturdy bamboo cane support whether in a container or in the ground.

Growing tips

In order to produce larger, denser fruits, it’s a good idea to pinch off all but 5 or 6 flowers from your plant once the flowers have started to become fruits. Also pinch off the growing tip when the plant is around 30cm tall to keep the plant nice and bushy. Aubergines need to be kept watered and will benefit from a fortnightly feed of a high potassium once it has started to produce fruit. A tomato food is perfect.

What to watch out for

Aubergines are prone to hosting a few pests – Red spider mite, Whitefly and Aphids are the most common and a prolonged large colony of any of these may also introduce sooty mould.

What to do when your plants arrive

  1. Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
  2. Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
  3. Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
