Golden Self Blanching celery is an 1886 heritage variety. It produces compact plants with thick ribbed juicy stalks with a fragrant aroma, free from bitterness and strings. This dwarf variety is ideal for smaller gardens producing naturally pale coloured stalks with a crisp texture and mild flavour. This celery has no need for earthing up, hence its name! It will benefit from plenty of rich soil and water and can be harvested August to November. A great choice for gardens of any size, especially when planted closely together. You can also grow Golden Self Blanching celery in deep pots and also grows well alongside leeks.

Planning your site
In the wild, Celery grows in boggy ground, and its cultivated counterpart needs similar conditions of rich, moisture retentive soil in order to thrive. You can prepare your ground by digging a trench in autumn and filling it with organic matter so that the site has extra nutrient value come planting out. Plant plugs around 25cm apart in raised beds, large pots or open ground.
Growing tips
Regular watering is vital – plants should never be allowed to dry out. Self-blanching celery can be planted at ground level and will blanch itself by self-shading. Otherwise you can ‘earth- up stems by drawing soil around the plant as it grows. If you are growing celery in pots, feed your plants every fortnight with a balanced liquid general fertiliser during the summer.

What to do when your plants arrive
- Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
- Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
- Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
