Planning your site

Many of the herbs we use in the UK originate in warmer climates and from hardy wild plants which can withstand drought and low-nutrient soil. With this in mind, you want to make sure that your herbs are going to receive plenty of sun wherever you choose to put them, whether in a pot or in the ground. Most herbs will benefit from decent soil which has been previously mulched and into which they can easily push their roots (we all like things to be as easy as possible don’t we?).

Growing tips

The more succulent herbs, and certainly your annuals such as Basil and Coriander will really thrive if you water them regularly and if they get a little shade when it gets really hot. Perrenial herbs will greatly benefit from a hard cut back to the lowest point of green growth at the end of the summer and an application of mulch. Some herbs are best grown in pots as they spread rapidly and may become pernicious. These include all the Mints and Lemon Balm which we strongly recommend you grow in containers, whether these are sunk into the ground or not.

What to look out for

Herbs are generally very hardy, though the non-woody annual herbs may experience stress and disease if erratically watered, allowed to dry out, waterlogged or if sun-scorched. Woody perennial herbs will become leggy, unsightly and unproductive quite quickly if you do not cut them back in the autumn so don’t be afraid to give them a good haircut!

What to do when your plants arrive

  1. Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
  2. Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
  3. Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
