Growing Guide:
- Planting Time: Sow Carrot ‘Adelaide’ seeds directly in the garden from early spring to late summer. For continuous crops, sow in succession every 2-3 weeks.
- Soil Preference: Choose loose, well-draining soil that’s free from stones. Carrots prefer sandy loam with plenty of organic matter to promote straight, smooth root development.
- Sunlight: Plant in a sunny location, providing at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Carrots grow best in full sun but can tolerate light shade.
- Spacing: Sow seeds thinly, about 1/4 inch deep, and thin seedlings to 1-2 inches apart for proper root growth. Space rows 6-12 inches apart.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular, even watering ensures tender, juicy roots.
- Sowing Time: Sow directly outdoors from March to July.
- Harvesting Time: Harvest in 50-55 days from sowing, generally from June to October.

Planning your site
Carrots like a fairly loose and obstruction free, sandy soil which is light enough for them to push their long roots into. You may need to dig some horticultural sand into your soil, along with some organic matter if you have heavier clay soil. If you are growing in a container, it’s best to grow the shorter rooted varieties. If a carrot root hits a stone, it may split into multiple roots so it’s best to try to remove stones and lumps from the soil where possible.
Growing tips
Carrots are very drought-tolerant and don’t need much water though they will benefit from a good occasional soak especially in prolonged dry weather. Fast growing weeds can crowd out carrots though you need to be careful when weeding or thinning that you don’t crush the foliage as the smell attracts carrot fly. It’s wise to protect from carrot fly using a barrier of fleece or micromesh up to a height of 60cm as this is the highest that these little insects can fly!

What to do when your plants arrive
- Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
- Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
- Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
