Carrot ‘Flyaway’: A Sweet, Hardy, and Pest-Resistant Variety!

Carrot ‘Flyaway’ is a specially bred variety known for its excellent resistance to carrot fly, a common pest for gardeners. This carrot not only offers natural protection but also delivers a sweet, crisp flavour and smooth, cylindrical roots, making it a perfect choice for both fresh eating and cooking. Here’s a brief guide on how to cultivate Carrot ‘Flyaway’:

Growing Guide:

  1. Planting Time: Sow Carrot ‘Flyaway’ seeds directly in the garden from early spring to late summer. For a continuous crop, sow seeds every few weeks until mid-summer.
  2. Soil Preference: Grow in well-draining, loose, stone-free soil to encourage straight, smooth roots. Carrots prefer sandy loam enriched with organic matter.
  3. Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives full sun. Carrots need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and flavour development.
  4. Spacing: Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep and thin seedlings to 1-2 inches apart. Space rows about 6-12 inches apart to allow for proper root growth.
  5. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the early growth stages. Consistent watering helps develop tender, flavourful roots.
  6. Sowing Time: Sow directly outdoors from March to July.
  7. Harvesting Time: Harvest from July to November, approximately 80-90 days from sowing.

Notes: This variety is resistant to carrot fly, a common pest for carrots. ‘Flyaway’ produces sweet, cylindrical roots and is ideal for organic or pest-prone gardens.

Carrot ‘Flyaway’ is ready to harvest in about 80-90 days, producing sweet, firm roots with excellent texture. The variety’s natural carrot fly resistance makes it a robust option for home gardeners who want to avoid the challenges of pest damage.

Enjoy Carrot ‘Flyaway’ fresh, roasted, or added to soups and stews. Its delightful sweetness and pest-resistant qualities make it a favourite for anyone looking for a reliable and flavourful carrot crop!

Planning your site

Carrots like a fairly loose and obstruction free, sandy soil which is light enough for them to push their long roots into. You may need to dig some horticultural sand into your soil, along with some organic matter if you have heavier clay soil. If you are growing in a container, it’s best to grow the shorter rooted varieties. If a carrot root hits a stone, it may split into multiple roots so it’s best to try to remove stones and lumps from the soil where possible.

Growing tips

Carrots are very drought-tolerant and don’t need much water though they will benefit from a good occasional soak especially in prolonged dry weather. Fast growing weeds can crowd out carrots though you need to be careful when weeding or thinning that you don’t crush the foliage as the smell attracts carrot fly. It’s wise to protect from carrot fly using a barrier of fleece or micromesh up to a height of 60cm as this is the highest that these little insects can fly!

What to watch out for

Carrot fly, aphids and forking (unless you really want funny shaped carrots!)

What to do when your plants arrive

  1. Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
  2. Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
  3. Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
