Bean (French Dwarf) ‘Tendergreen’: A Compact and Flavourful Favourite!

Bean (French Dwarf) ‘Tendergreen’ is a compact, bush variety known for its prolific yields and tender, stringless pods. Ideal for small spaces or container gardening, ‘Tendergreen’ produces delicious beans that are perfect for fresh eating, freezing, or adding to a wide range of dishes. Here’s a brief guide on how to cultivate Bean ‘Tendergreen’:

Growing Guide:

  1. Planting Time: Sow ‘Tendergreen’ seeds directly outdoors from late spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Beans thrive in warm soil, so wait until the soil temperature reaches 15°C (59°F).
  2. Soil Preference: Choose well-draining, fertile soil. Beans benefit from soil enriched with compost or organic matter and prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  3. Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives full sun. Beans need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and pod production.
  4. Spacing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space plants 4-6 inches apart. Space rows 18-24 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation and ease of harvest.
  5. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod formation. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of disease.

Bean ‘Tendergreen’ matures in just 50-60 days, producing crisp, stringless pods about 6 inches long. Harvest regularly to encourage continuous production.

Enjoy the tender, flavourful beans fresh from the garden, steamed, sautéed, or added to salads and stir-fries. ‘Tendergreen’ is a reliable and easy-to-grow variety, perfect for gardeners of all levels!

Planning your site

Peas like well-drained, fertile soil and a sheltered sunny spot in the garden where they won’t be blown about too much. They will grow really well in raised beds or in pots which have plenty of rich growing medium. Peas need something to climb up – wiggly sticks of branching hazel is a great traditional method which looks beautiful even while the peas are small and will also keep birds at bay. You’ll need to make sure these are close enough to your peas that they will find them and begin to twirl their tendrils around them. The spacing between plants depends on the variety but generally beans are grown quite close together usually in rows or around supports.

Growing tips

The more you harvest, the more will grow! Try to wait til your pods have reached a decent size – we know it’s hard but they will become sweeter as the starches mature! Make sure you keep peas well and regularly watered and don’t let them dry out.

Things to watch out for

Birds are really your biggest problem as they love the young shoots. Also make sure your plants are kept watered as they don’t take kindly to drying out!

What to do when your plants arrive

  1. Unpack them. Your seedlings will arrive carefully packed in bio-degradable straw, cardboard and paper. They may look a little bit bedraggled from their journey. Don’t panic – this is totally normal and they should soon perk up. Please try and unpack your plants as soon as they arrive, as every extra hour they spend in the box will add to the stress of travelling to their new home.
  2. Give them a drink. Having spent a day or two in the post, your new plants will be thirsty! Stand them up in some fresh water for a few minutes to make sure their roots have been thoroughly soaked before planting.
  3. Plant them out into their forever home! Your plants can’t wait to get their roots into the soil. Plant them out according to the instructions that will have come in the box with them. Make sure you water them in well, and give them plenty to drink until their roots have had a chance to get settled.
